When Trees and Shrubs Outgrow Their Space: A Carmel Landscape Transformation

One of the most common reasons homeowners remove landscape plants isn’t because they’re unhealthy—it’s because they’ve become too large for the space where they were planted. That’s exactly what we encountered during a recent project for a homeowner in Carmel.
A Blue Spruce That Had Outgrown Its Location
The first removal involved a mature Blue Spruce planted near the corner of the home.
Over the years, it had grown into the brick exterior, reached the roofline, and was pressing against the gutters. While Blue Spruce trees are beautiful, they can eventually become much larger than many homeowners anticipate when they’re planted close to a house. Removing the tree opened the area and eliminated ongoing contact with the home’s exterior.
Four Mature Arborvitae Near the Air Conditioner
On the opposite side of the house, four mature Arborvitae had grown well above the gutter line and were crowding the outdoor air conditioning unit. Large shrubs around HVAC equipment can reduce accessibility for maintenance, limit airflow, and make routine servicing more difficult. Removing these Arborvitae gives the homeowner an opportunity to redesign the area with plants better suited to the available space.
Removing an Overgrown Ornamental Tree
The final removal was a decorative ornamental tree near the front garage. Like the other landscape plants, it had simply outgrown its original planting location. Removing it creates new possibilities for a landscape that will remain attractive without eventually crowding the home.
Stump Removal Comes Next
All plants were removed from the ground up. We’ll return next week to complete the stump removals. Because irrigation lines are located near the Arborvitae, we’ll carefully excavate and remove those stumps using hand digging and reciprocating saws rather than relying solely on heavy equipment. Before performing any underground work, we’ve already submitted the required utility locate request.

Choosing the right plant for the right location is one of the best investments homeowners can make. Trees and shrubs that are appropriately sized for their mature growth require less maintenance and are less likely to interfere with your home’s siding, roof, gutters, HVAC equipment, or walkways.
