Arborvitae Cutbacks and Winter HOA Property Maintenance in Carmel, Indiana

Overgrown shrubs, encroaching vegetation, and neglected fence lines can make even well-maintained HOA communities look untidy. For homeowners associations and condominium communities, addressing these issues before the next growing season can make a noticeable difference in the appearance and usability of shared spaces.

Big Boy Services recently completed an arborvitae cutback project at a community swimming pool in Carmel, Indiana. The project is a great example of how fall and winter can be ideal times for HOA communities to address overgrown vegetation and other property maintenance needs.

Arborvitae Cutback at a Carmel HOA Swimming Pool

The arborvitae surrounding this community pool had gradually grown beyond its intended boundaries.

Along more than half of the pool’s perimeter, the shrubs had grown through and over the surrounding fence. This created an overgrown appearance and contributed to unwanted vegetation, including poison ivy, encroaching through the arborvitae and fence into the pool area.

Earlier in the year, Big Boy Services had also been called to remove a significant amount of poison ivy from the pool area before the swimming season began.

Rather than continuing to address individual areas of encroaching vegetation, the HOA approved a more comprehensive arborvitae cutback after the pool closed for the season.

Creating a Cleaner Fence Line

For this project, Big Boy Services cut the arborvitae back approximately 12–18 inches from the outside of the pool fence.

We also reduced the height of the overgrowth to approximately one foot above the top of the fence.

This established a much cleaner and more consistent appearance along the fence line while creating additional clearance between the shrubs and the pool enclosure.

The before-and-after results demonstrate how strategic shrub cutbacks can improve the appearance of community amenities without necessarily requiring complete shrub removal.

Why Fall and Winter Are Good Times for HOA Shrub Cutbacks

Many HOA maintenance projects are easier to schedule during the colder months, particularly when they involve common areas or community amenities that experience heavier use during spring and summer.

Swimming pools are an excellent example.

Once the pool closes for the season, property managers and HOA boards have an opportunity to address vegetation that may have become problematic during the growing season.

Other projects that can make sense during the fall and winter include:

  • Cutting back overgrown arborvitae and other shrubs along fences.

  • Removing unwanted or overgrown landscape vegetation.

  • Cutting back brush encroaching on grass lines.

  • Reclaiming common areas where brush has gradually taken over.

  • Addressing vegetation growing over sidewalks and walkways.

  • Improving clearance around community fences and amenities.

  • Removing unwanted landscape beds and vegetation.

Taking care of these projects during the off-season can help communities start the next growing season with cleaner, more manageable common areas.

Brush Cutting and Landscape Removal for HOA Communities

Not every vegetation problem requires a complete landscape renovation.

Sometimes, the issue is simply that existing shrubs have outgrown their intended space, brush is encroaching on maintained areas, or unwanted vegetation is making common areas difficult to maintain.

Big Boy Services provides several services that complement one another when addressing these types of property maintenance needs.

Our services include:

  • Shrub removal: Removing unwanted or overgrown shrubs from landscape beds and common areas.

  • Landscape removal: Clearing unwanted landscape vegetation and reclaiming areas that no longer serve their intended purpose.

  • Brush cutting: Cutting back unwanted brush that is overtaking grass lines, fence lines, and other community areas.

  • Arborvitae and shrub cutbacks: Reducing overgrowth and improving clearance around fences and other structures.

  • Stump grinding: Grinding stumps left behind after qualifying tree and shrub removal projects.

  • Mulch installation: Installing mulch in landscape beds to give maintained areas a cleaner, finished appearance.

These services can help HOA communities address a variety of vegetation issues without having to coordinate multiple contractors for every project.
