At Big Boy Services, we recently completed a dramatic backyard transformation for a homeowner in the Glendale/Clearwater area on the north side of Indianapolis. What started as an overgrown jungle of invasive honeysuckle is now an open, usable outdoor space filled with sunlight and opportunity.

This project highlights a growing issue throughout Indianapolis, Carmel, Fishers, Westfield, Noblesville, Geist, and surrounding communities: invasive honeysuckle taking over residential properties, fence lines, common areas, apartment complexes, and commercial landscapes.

Before: A Backyard Completely Overtaken by Honeysuckle

The homeowner contacted us because a corner section of the backyard had become completely overwhelmed by invasive honeysuckle growth. Several of the honeysuckle bases had grown to the size of small trees, creating dense shade, limiting usable yard space, and choking out surrounding vegetation.

Like many properties throughout Central Indiana, years of unchecked growth had turned the area into a thick wall of brush and invasive vegetation.

Problems caused by overgrown honeysuckle often include:

  • Loss of usable lawn space

  • Reduced sunlight for grass and landscaping

  • Fence line encroachment

  • Increased maintenance difficulty

  • Poor visibility around property lines

  • Habitat for pests and unwanted wildlife

  • Declining curb appeal and property appearance

For HOA communities, condominium associations, apartment complexes, and commercial properties, invasive honeysuckle can quickly spread across retention ponds, wooded buffers, perimeter fencing, walking trails, and common areas if left unmanaged.

The Removal Process

For this project, our crew removed a tremendous amount of dense honeysuckle growth from the backyard corner and along the fence line.

The project included:

Complete Honeysuckle Removal

We cut and removed heavy invasive brush growth, including multiple mature honeysuckle trunks approaching small-tree size.

Fence Line Cutbacks

We also performed approximately two feet of vegetation cutback behind the fence line to help slow future overgrowth and improve long-term maintenance access.

Two of the large honeysuckle stumps were ground out using our stump grinder to eliminate trip hazards, improve appearance, and prepare the area for future landscaping or lawn restoration.

After: Sunlight, Open Space, and Endless Possibilities

The transformation was dramatic.

Once the honeysuckle was removed, the backyard immediately gained significant afternoon sunlight and usable space. The homeowner now has the flexibility to:

  • Plant grass

  • Create a garden

  • Install ornamental landscaping

  • Grow vegetables or flowers

  • Improve drainage and airflow

  • Expand usable outdoor living space

Most importantly, the property no longer feels closed in by invasive overgrowth.

The customer was extremely pleased with the final result, and the before-and-after difference speaks for itself.

Why Honeysuckle Removal Matters in Indianapolis and Surrounding Communities

Bush honeysuckle is one of the most aggressive invasive species affecting properties throughout Indianapolis and the surrounding suburbs.

We commonly see severe honeysuckle overgrowth in:

  • Indianapolis

  • Carmel

  • Fishers

  • Westfield

  • Noblesville

  • Geist-area properties

  • HOA common areas

  • Condominium communities

  • Apartment complexes

  • Commercial properties

Without regular maintenance, honeysuckle spreads rapidly along fence rows, wooded edges, drainage areas, retention ponds, and property boundaries.

For property managers and HOA boards, unmanaged vegetation can negatively impact property appearance, resident satisfaction, maintenance budgets, and long-term landscape health.

HOA, Condo Board, and Property Management Services

Big Boy Services works with:

  • HOA boards

  • Condominium associations

  • Property managers

  • Commercial property owners

  • Apartment complexes

  • Residential communities

We provide brush clearing, fence line maintenance, invasive species removal, and vegetation management services tailored to community and commercial properties.

Long runs of honeysuckle along perimeter fencing, wooded common areas, and retention ponds are often ideal winter projects. Winter vegetation work frequently allows easier access, better visibility, and reduced disruption to residents and tenants.

In many cases, we can also offer discounted pricing for winter brush-clearing and honeysuckle-removal projects.
