Honeysuckle and Vine Removal in Northeast Indianapolis: A Small Backyard Cleanup With a Dramatic Transformation
Overgrown areas don’t always need to be completely cleared. Sometimes, the best approach is to remove invasive and unwanted vegetation while preserving the trees and plants that add value to the property.
That was the strategy behind a recent backyard cleanup project completed by Big Boy Services for a homeowner in northeast Indianapolis.
The Problem: Honeysuckle and Vines Had Taken Over the Backyard Corner
One corner of the backyard had become heavily overgrown with honeysuckle and vines.
The leafy vines had grown up and over the honeysuckle, creating a thick, tangled mass of vegetation approximately 10 to 12 feet high. From the outside, it was difficult to see what was underneath the overgrowth or determine which trees and plants were worth preserving.
This is a common problem with overgrown areas. Honeysuckle, vines, brush, and other aggressive vegetation can quickly hide desirable trees and make a portion of the property feel unusable or neglected.
Simply removing everything, however, is not always the best solution.
Our Recommendation: Selective Vegetation Removal
After evaluating the area and discussing the homeowner’s goals, Big Boy Services recommended a selective cleanup.
The goal was to:
Remove the vines
Reduce and shape the honeysuckle
Preserve desirable trees
Open up the corner of the backyard without turning it into a completely bare area
We removed the vines and cut the honeysuckle down to approximately five feet. We then shaped the remaining honeysuckle to give the area a cleaner and more intentional appearance.
During the process, we preserved one tall maple tree estimated to be approximately 18 feet tall.
We also preserved a dogwood tree that we knew was located in the area. As the honeysuckle and vines were removed, we discovered another dogwood tree hidden in the center of the overgrowth and preserved that tree as well.
Why Selective Honeysuckle and Vine Removal Can Be Better Than Clearing Everything
When an area has been neglected or overgrown for years, the vegetation often hides what is underneath.
There may be trees worth saving. There may be desirable ornamental plants. There may be features of the property that simply cannot be seen until the unwanted vegetation is removed.
A professional approach to shrub removal and brush clearing should consider the property owner’s goals and the future use of the area.

The before-and-after photos show how quickly an overgrown corner can be transformed once the vines and unwanted growth are removed.
The homeowner was very pleased with the finished result, and the project created a cleaner, more usable, and more intentional-looking backyard space while preserving the trees that added value to the property.
