Why We Treat Bradford Pear Stumps Before Stump Grinding

When most people think about tree removal, they assume the job is finished once the tree is on the ground. Unfortunately, that isn’t always the case—especially with Bradford Pear trees.
Recently, Big Boy Services removed a Bradford Pear tree for a self-managed condominium association in the Eagle Creek area. After safely removing the tree, we completed another important step before stump grinding: stump treatment.
Why Bradford Pear Trees Are Different
Bradford Pear trees are well known for producing aggressive stump sprouts and root suckers after they’re cut down. Even after a tree has been removed, the living root system often has enough stored energy to produce numerous new shoots around the stump and surrounding landscape.
Without proper treatment, property owners may find themselves dealing with repeated regrowth.
Our Process
For this project, we first made a fresh cut across the remaining stump. A fresh surface allows the herbicide to contact the living cambium tissue more effectively. We then carefully applied a concentrated glyphosate solution around the cambium layer, which is the living tissue just beneath the bark responsible for transporting nutrients throughout the tree.
Rather than immediately grinding the stump, we allow adequate time before returning to complete the stump grinding. This helps improve long-term control of stump regrowth.
Why Licensing Matters
Applying pesticides commercially isn’t something anyone can legally perform.
Big Boy Services is a licensed Category 3A Indiana Commercial Pesticide Business; Aaron Rader, owner of Big Boy Services, is a licensed Category 3A Indiana Pesticide Applicator.
That means our customers can have confidence that herbicide applications are performed by a properly licensed applicator following Indiana regulations and label requirements.
