Arborvitae Removal in Carmel, Indiana: When Experience Matters More Than Equipment

Large arborvitae can make excellent privacy screens around pools and backyards, but there comes a point when they simply outgrow their purpose. That’s exactly what happened during one of our recent projects in an upscale Carmel neighborhood, where a homeowner decided it was time to remove six mature arborvitae and make way for a completely new landscape design.
Removing Six Mature Arborvitae
Our crew safely removed all six trees, opening the backyard and dramatically changing the appearance of the pool area. The transformation was immediate. What had once been a dense natural barrier became an open space ready for professional landscaping.
Stump Grinding—With One Important Exception
Five of the six stumps were safely ground below grade using our stump grinder.
The sixth stump, however, required a completely different approach.
It was located within approximately 18 inches of a private gas line supplying the home’s pool heater. While utility locating helps identify public utilities, private utility lines require additional caution. Rather than risk damaging the gas line with grinding equipment, we chose the safer solution.
Hand Removal of a Difficult Stump
Instead of using the stump grinder, we excavated the stump entirely by hand.
Using shovels, heavy-duty loppers, and a corded reciprocating saw, we strategically exposed and cut the root system until the entire stump and root ball could be removed safely.
The finished root ball weighed an estimated 75 to 80 pounds, but it was successfully removed and hauled away without disturbing the nearby gas line.
Sometimes the Best Equipment Is Experience
Many people assume every stump can simply be ground away. In reality, experienced contractors know that’s not always the safest option.
